In a word, the Echoplex EP-3 tape echo effect is awesome. Sadly, it's a toy not many of us can afford. They're only available second-hand at absurdly high prices. And we haven't even gotten into the cost of maintenance. Then, Dunlop came on the scene with the EP103 Echoplex Delay. It's a Phase 90-style stomp box that has a lot to offer. The EP103 adds a very convincing, warm '60s delay to your original guitar sound (that is kept analogue, incidentally, with a lot of headroom) in the style of the original Echoplex, which means you can leave your tapes at home.

Age mode

For guitarists who prefer the instability of a characteristic old tape echo machine, Dunlop has added an especially juicy feature to the EP103, the Age mode. To activate this feature, simply push down on the volume knob. The further you turn the knob clockwise, the 'older' the sound becomes as more distortion and modulation is added. In either mode, you have a delay time of 4 to 750 milliseconds at your disposal and even as much as 4 seconds if you connect the separately available MXR M199 Tap Tempo Switch.
